LANDOVER — The Redskins lead 9-3 at halftime of Thursday’s game against the New York Jets. Even in the preseason, the game had produced some interesting moments.
Here are the highlights:
Smith survives brief scare
On his very first play in a Redskins uniform, Redskins quarterback Alex Smith was drilled to the ground by New York Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins. The play drew a roughing the passer penalty, but Smith was okay.
The 34-year-old finished his first and only drive, completing four of six passes for 48 yards. The Redskins finished with a field goal.
Daron Payne, Preston Smith and Troy Apke make life difficult for Sam Darnold
On the other side of the ball, the Redskins defense made the first half quite difficult for Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.
Rookie Daron Payne didn’t wait long to make an immediate impact:

And then Preston Smith had his turn:
Preston Smith sack was a nice team effort. Front 4 all generate pressure, coverage solid on the back end. Darnold has nowhere to go with the ball and nowhere to go in the pocket. #Redskins pic.twitter.com/xhE50DdXMf

Rookie Troy Apke, too, came away with an interception — thanks to a great play made by safety Deshazor Everett:
This was called a roughing the passer……. c’mon. pic.twitter.com/QRc3wIiBuh

It wouldn’t be a football game, however, without injuries.
Running backs Byron Marshall and Samaje Perine both left the game to be evaluated for injuries. Perine, who was hurt after ripping off a 30-yard gain, was evaluated for an ankle sprain, while Marshall was being looked at for a lower leg injury.
