COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has been found dead by her roommate, who told police the door of their home was open.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 56-year-old Joan Staub was beaten to death.

Columbia Police said on Twitter that Staub’s roommate called police around 8:30 a.m. Thursday after finding the door open at their home south of downtown Columbia.

Police Chief Skip Holbrook says the crime doesn’t match the pattern of any other break-ins in the area, so his investigators think the killing is an isolated incident.
