NEW YORK (AP) - A Bronx teenager has been indicted on a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in the stabbing death of a 15-year-old student in a Bronx classroom.

Eighteen-year-old Abel Cedeno was initially charged with murder in the death of Matthew McCree, who was fatally stabbed with a switchblade last month at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation.

Another classmate, who tried to intervene, was critically wounded.

An attorney for the victim’s family, Sanford Rubenstein, says the grand jury panel is considering additional charges.

Bail for Cedeno was set at $500,000. He had previously pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges.

The grand jury’s decision was announced Tuesday following a court hearing attended by family members of the victim and the suspect, believed to be a victim of bullying.
