COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - Police say a Rhode Island man is facing a felony charge of animal cruelty after they say his dog had to be put down because it was so severely neglected.
Coventry police say 49-year-old Michael Almeida is charged with malicious injury to an animal following an investigation from the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
WJAR-TV reports that Almeida was reported following his visit to a veterinarian earlier this month, where the SPCA says the dog was in such poor condition that it had to be put down.
Almeida hasn’t returned a request for comment. The SPCA says Almeida did not cooperate with their investigation.
He is due in court in February.
