Former White House ethics lawyer James Schultz said that he plans on returning to a private firm after resigning from his post last week, Politico reported.

“That was something Don [McGahn, the White House counsel] and I discussed very early on,” Mr. Schultz told Politico.

Mr. Schultz returns to Philadelphia-based law firm Cozen O’Connor, where he previously worked, after working in the White House for just over a year.

He told Politico that his decision is not politically motivated, adding that he always intended to go back into the private sector.

Mr. Schultz said he’s open to continuing his role defending the administration in the media from an outside perspective.

“That’ll be something I’d be willing to do, certainly, getting out and talking about the good work the Trump administration is doing on these issues,” he told Politico.

Office of Government Ethics chief Walter Shaub resigned earlier this year over numerous disagreements with the Trump administration, which he made public after exiting his post.
