ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - A defense attorney is asking for a trial date for a Utah man charged in a massive Utah wildfire that destroyed 13 homes and cost nearly $40 million to fight.

Attorney Andrew Deiss asked for a three-day trial during a Tuesday hearing for 61-year-old Robert Ray Lyman. The trial could be set early next year.

Lyman is charged with misdemeanor reckless burning and burning without a permit in the fire that torched more than 100 square miles (161 kilometers) this summer.

Authorities say the fire was started by weed burning at a cabin near the southern Utah ski town of Brian Head, a popular getaway for Las Vegas residents.

Deiss has questioned prosecutors’ evidence and said his client is a former high school basketball coach who fully cooperated with the investigation.
