The White House congratulated President-elect Emmanuel Macron of France Sunday on his election over far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.

In a two-sentence statement, the White House offered congratulations to the 39-year-old Mr. Macron “and the people of France on their successful presidential election.”

“We look forward to working with the new president and continuing our close cooperation with the French government,” the White House said.

Mr. Macron ran as a pro-European Union centrist, while Ms. Le Pen was viewed as a populist who is more in line with President Trump.

Mr. Trump praised Ms. Le Pen but stopped short of endorsing her, while former President Barack Obama came out in support of Mr. Macron.

The French election in its final days was roiled by a massive hacking of Mr. Macron’s campaign emails, which were posted online.
