GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Three leaders in an international financial-fraught network have been sentenced after a Mississippi woman tipped Homeland Security Investigations.
The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2qkaRLo) a judge sentenced 31-year-old Rasaq Aderoju Raheem to 115 years in prison Wednesday. 30-year-old Oladimeji Seun Ayelotan received a 95-year prison term, and 45-year-old Femi Alexander Mewase received 25 years.
The men were convicted on multiple charges including mail and card fraud. They were extradited from South Africa along with 18 other defendants.
HSI began investigating after a Biloxi woman reported being scammed in 2011. The woman met a man on a dating website and received a bounced check for $3,000 to re-ship a package to South Africa. The packages she and others received in scams contained equipment bought with stolen financial information and later sold for a profit.
