PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Plans unveiled this week for a new Pawtucket Red Sox stadium are already meeting resistance in the Rhode Island House of Representatives.
Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello tells WPRO-AM (https://bit.ly/2qWgfnK ) it might be “too late” to consider the team’s request for state help for the $83 million project unless Gov. Gina Raimondo, a fellow Democrat, has already done the foundational work and introduces legislation soon.
The team is seeking a $23 million state investment to help build a downtown Pawtucket ballpark for the minor league team.
Raimondo has said the financing proposal presented by the team and Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien “merits a full public vetting as part of the legislative process.”
Mattiello says he doesn’t want to take it up unless Raimondo has fully endorsed it. Legislators are nearing their session’s end.
