President Trump said Monday that the search for a new FBI director was “moving rapidly,” as fallout over his abrupt firing of James B. Comey last week continued to grow in Washington.
Pressed by reporters about the status of the search, Mr. Trump responded, “moving rapidly.”
He gave the assessment during brief remarks while meeting with the leader of the United Arab Emirates in the Oval Office.
Justice Department officials interviewed eight candidates for the job Saturday, and Mr. Trump previously said he could pick someone for the job as soon as Friday.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the Justice Department was leading the search process and that the final decision would be made by the president based on the agency’s recommendations.
