ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities in San Diego County say a motorist struck in the head and killed by a stray bullet in Escondido likely drove through a gang shootout.
Police Lt. Justin Murphy says after the woman was hit Tuesday night, her Toyota Camry veered and smashed into a parked truck.
Barbara Allen tells the Union-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2lYhMCX ) she was in her apartment when she heard four gunshots followed by the sound of a crash. Allen says she rushed outside and found the victim slumped over at the wheel of the Toyota.
The 55-year-old Escondido resident died at a hospital.
Police say the victim drove through a gunfight near two apartment buildings. Investigators found shell casings and bullet fragments.
Murphy says detectives have not made any arrests or released suspect descriptions.
