NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say an inmate at the Northern State Correctional facility in Newport has died after an apparent suicide attempt.
Twenty-six-year-old Joshua Bittner of Fairfax, Vermont, was found hanging in his cell on Thursday night.
Police say prison staff provided emergency medical care. Bittner was then taken to North Country Hospital and later to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
He died at the hospital on Friday afternoon.
Police say an autopsy is planned and the investigation is ongoing.
