U.S. passport holders may have to tackle an extra layer of paperwork when visiting countries within the European Union if a new resolution passed by a European Parliament is fully enforced.
The BBC reported Thursday that the nonbinding European Parliament resolution, if adopted by member states, would be a retaliatory measure against the United States for failing to grant visa waivers to citizens from five E.U. countries — Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania.
For its part, the European Commission, the executive arm of the E.U., appears to be more hopeful that a diplomatic resolution might stave off retaliatory action.
“We will report on further progress made before the end of June and continue to work closely with both the European Parliament and the Council,” said a Commission spokeswoman, Reuters reported.
A Commission official said talks with the U.S. for full visa reciprocity are ongoing, but wouldn’t comment on any immediate measures, according to Reuters.
