PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Cumberland County Jail inmate who hanged himself in maximum security wing has died.

The family of 26-year-old Dante Majeroni said he was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at Maine Medical Center. His sister tells the Portland Press Herald that he was declared brain dead before his other organs began to fail.

Sheriff Kevin Joyce says Majeroni managed to hang himself a week ago after being taken off a suicide watch for a previous suicide attempt.

Majeroni was brought to the jail on Feb. 15 on a domestic violence charge. His family contends jail staff did not do enough to protect him. The jail has four mental health workers for more than 400 inmates housed at the jail.
