PHOENIX (AP) - Republicans on an Arizona House panel voted down a proposal that had broad support in the Senate requiring regular reviews of more than $12 billion in exemptions in the current sales tax code.

The proposal from Democrat Steve Farley of Tucson and Republican David Farnsworth of Mesa passed the Senate on a 28-2 vote last month. It failed in the House Ways and Means Committee on a 4-5 vote Wednesday.

Farley says more than 330 current tax breaks for specific businesses or transactions are creating an uneven playing field and starving the state of needed revenue. He said he suspects Gov. Doug Ducey’s office interceded to stop the legislation, but Ducey spokesman Daniel Scarpinato said that wasn’t the case.
