Many thanks to Kelly Riddell for her excellent Commentary piece, “Why Planned Parenthood must be defunded” (Web, March 9). Ms. Riddell points out that Planned Parenthood is an abortion organization that gets 86 percent of its non-government revenue from abortions. In fact, President Trump offered to continue the group’s federal funding if it stopped doing abortions. It refused.
Defunding Planned Parenthood of more than half a billion dollars annually will be a tough legislative fight because the Democrats receive a lot of campaign support from Planned Parenthood. (The organization spent $30 million on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.) Their desire to retain this campaign funding and unrestricted, unlimited abortions forces them to prostitute themselves and lie repeatedly about the organization’s services even when their lies are discredited.
For example, in October 2015, The Washington Post gave three Pinocchios to the claim that Planned Parenthood does mammograms, writing: “The myth that Planned Parenthood actually offers mammogram X rays to patients has been long debunked, and needs to stop being repeated. Despite having been “long debunked,” U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, New York Democrat, tweeted last week “#Trumpcare cuts @PPFA funds, hurting millions of women who turn there for mammograms, maternity care, cancer screenings & more.” Mr. Schumer received three Pinocchios from the Post. Planned Parenthood doesn’t offer maternity care any more than it offers mammograms. Mr. Schumer has been told this many times.
Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards said the group is necessary for women’s health care, but federal community health centers provide many more services for women than Planned Parenthood, including mammograms and maternity care. However, these centers do not perform abortions and therefore don’t sell aborted baby organs like Planned Parenthood does.
