Remains of Fessenden sailor killed at Pearl Harbor back home

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The remains of a North Dakota sailor who died during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II are back home.

KFGO radio reports (https://bit.ly/2sEXNxU ) the remains of Gunners Mate 1st Class Arthur Clarence Neuenschwander arrived at the Fargo airport Wednesday night. A public memorial service is scheduled Saturday in his hometown of Fessenden.

Gov. Doug Burgum has directed government agencies to fly flags at half-staff Saturday in his honor.

Neuenschwander was assigned to the USS Oklahoma. He was 32 when it was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941.

Remains of many service members who died at Pearl Harbor were buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii, unidentified for decades. Neuenschwander’s remains were identified earlier this year through DNA samples provided by his family.
