FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Leaders in Fort Smith have approved a new contract with a recycling company, which will end the city’s temporary practice of dumping recyclables into the landfill.

Fort Smith’s Board of Directors approved the two-year contract Tuesday. The city has dumped more than 89 percent of all recyclable materials into a landfill since October 2014 after the city’s contract with a recycling vendor expired.

The city did not tell residents that it was taking recyclable materials to the landfill until last month. At that point, nearly 1,500 tons of materials set aside for recycling were taken to the landfill instead.

According to the Southwest Times Record (https://bit.ly/2sVDUoY ), the new contract will cost the city about $14,000 per month.
