RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Reno weather data center that sends critical information to firefighters and farmers in the western region is in danger of closing under President Donald Trump’s proposed budget.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reported (https://on.rgj.com/2rnYoa3) Tuesday that the president’s budget would cut 82 percent of the Regional Climate Centers’ budget. The program has multiple centers, including one in Reno, that produce information that is important to firefighters taking on wild land fires, farmers picking when and where to plant their crops and engineers designing structures that can withstand extreme weather.
A Washoe County official says the data is also a major part of reducing risks during hazardous situations.
Center operators say if the president’s budget is approved, they would run out of money by March.
