BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana lawmakers want to toughen requirements for parental consent when a minor seeks an abortion.

Current law requires a notarized statement from a legal guardian of an unmarried girl under age 18 before a doctor can perform an abortion on the teenager.

A proposal from Republican Sen. Beth Mizell of Franklinton would require the guardian also to provide proof of identity, including a government-issued identification card such as a driver’s license. The doctor would have to keep a copy of the ID information.

Violating the provisions could carry jail time.

The House gave final passage to the measure with a 92-0 vote Thursday, sending it to the governor’s desk for consideration. The Senate already has backed the proposal in a 29-6 vote.
