Man sentenced in killing of Long Island gas station clerk

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man has been sentenced in the slaying of a gas station clerk and 10 other armed robberies.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2tpFUqz ) 25-year-old Joshua Golson-Orelus, of New Cassel, was sentenced to 55 years to life in prison Tuesday. In February, a jury found Golson-Orelus guilty of multiple armed robberies and first-degree murder in the killing 56-year-old Hany Awad.

Prosecutors say Golson-Orelus killed the clerk during a six-month period when he robbed gas stations and convenience stores throughout Long Island. Golson-Orelus was arrested in 2015 after police tracked a GPS device that was in a stolen money pack.

Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas says the sentence is appropriate for someone who caused the death of an innocent man who was doing his job.
