RENO, Nev. (AP) - Protesters plan weekly demonstrations to encourage the state’s two senators to push back against President Donald Trump’s actions and cabinet nominees.
More than 50 people were protesting by noon Tuesday, with concerns ranging from controversial cabinet picks to the Dakota Access pipeline, the Reno Gazette-Journal (https://on.rgj.com/2j5InkA ) reported.
Groups of 20 at a time were taken into the senators’ Reno office building.
The protests are set to occur every Tuesday during Trump’s first 100 days in office.
“If they’re getting that memo every week, they’ll know people are watching,” said Working Families Party organizer Mike Palzes.
He said he’s hoping to sway Sen. Dean Heller, one of the more moderate Republicans.
“I do think he’s in the unique position where he’s not an ideologue and up for re-election in 2018,” he said.
Spokespeople for Heller and Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto said they welcome the feedback.
Heller has not said he opposes any of Trump’s nominees. A spokesman declined to say whether the senator supports Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson, a former Exxon Mobil CEO, and Secretary of Treasury nominee Steve Mnuchin.
Cortez Masto has expressed support for some of the cabinet picks and opposition to several others.
A spokesman said Cortez Masto is not going to support Mnuchin.
The senator has also publicly stated that she opposes Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions.
Cortez Masto voted for Defense Secretary James Mattis and has said she plans to also support the nomination of Elaine Chao to lead the Transportation Department.
