NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A Newark man who tried to run down a rental car lot worker, committed a carjacking and seriously injured a state police detective during an early morning crime spree has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
State authorities say 28-year-old Terry Saunders had pleaded guilty last November to carjacking, robbery and aggravated assault charges stemming from the incidents that occurred on Sept. 30, 2014.
They say Saunders drove a stolen car onto the rental car lot in Newark, then drove to the back and stole an SUV. He was shot by a lot worker during a violent confrontation, then fled on foot and tried to carjack another vehicle. But the detective confronted Saunders and fired several shots during a struggle, hitting Saunders once.
The detective suffered broken bones in his spine, a broken shoulder, broken ribs and head wounds.
