MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - A former deputy at the Berkeley County jail in Moncks Corner has been charged with assaulting an inmate.

The State Law Enforcement Division said in a news release Tuesday that 37-year-old Devin Leann Lopez of Summerville is charged with third-degree assault and battery.

SLED says the attack happened at the jail in 2014 when she hit a 30-year-old inmate in the groin with an open hand while she supervised him as he cleaned his cell.

The man had been jailed on charges of resisting arrest and threatening a public official.

Lopez worked for the sheriff’s office from 2011 until she was fired in 2015.

It wasn’t known if she has an attorney.
