TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A bill to expand Medicaid in Kansas could be saved from an upcoming deadline if the House votes by supermajority to pull it out of committee.

Wichita Democratic Rep. Jim Ward moved Tuesday to pull the bill onto the floor for debate. The motion needs 70 votes Wednesday to pass.

The House Health and Human Services Committee tabled the bill Monday before a deadline for bills to pass their chamber of origin, possibly killing it for the year. The House could pull it out of committee or House Speaker Ron Ryckman, Jr. could exempt it from the deadline. But he indicated Tuesday morning he wouldn’t do that.

The bill would extend Medicaid to non-elderly adults earning up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.
