The Syfy network has approved a fifth outing in the campy “Sharknado” franchise, Variety reported Thursday. Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will reprise their roles as grizzled shark slayers Fin Shepard and Alex Wexler.
With a plot reportedly centering on a globak sharkpocalypse — or is it sharknadopocalypse? — filming is expected to take place in five countries, said Variety, quite a journey from Sharknado’s humble beginnings in 2013.
While the original “Sharknado” and its first sequel enjoyed critical and audience acclaim — “Proudly, shamelessly, and gloriously brainless, Sharknado redefines ’so bad it’s good’ for a new generation,” raves Rotten Tomatoes’ “Critics Consensus” — each subsequent iteration has seen a drop in its Rotten Tomato “Tomatometer” score, with the 2016 outing receiving favorable reviews from only 18 percent of critics and 28 percent of audiences.
“The 4th Awakens loses the ridiculous charm of its predecessors, leaving only clumsy social commentary and monotonous schtick that’s lost its bite,” complains Rotten Tomatoes.
