WASHINGTON (AP) - A couple hundred people are blocking an intersection in northwest Washington as part of a “Day Without Immigrants” protest.
The protesters are expected to make their way to the White House on Thursday afternoon. The protesters have shut down the busy intersection at 14th and U streets as speakers address the cheering crowd.
Protesters are carrying signs that say “no human is illegal” and “Do you eat food? Then you need immigrants.”
Immigrants are staying home from school and work to show how critical they are to the American economy. It’s a response to President Donald Trump, whose administration has pledged to increase the deportation of immigrants living in the country illegally. Trump campaigned on building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and blamed high unemployment on immigration.
