RIALTO, Calif. (AP) - A defense industry contractor has agreed to pay $700,000 or more each year to treat contaminated groundwater in Southern California.
West Valley Water District in Rialto says a settlement with Goodrich Corp. authorizes funding for operations and maintenance costs of a new environmental cleanup system.
The district introduced the $23 million specialized treatment plant at its headquarters late last year. The San Bernardino Sun reported (https://bit.ly/2kSrPfz ) this week that the system uses microbes to break down perchlorate, a harmful chemical that can interfere with thyroid function.
Previous military, industrial and agricultural activity caused perchlorate to pollute the region’s water.
West Valley general manager Matthew Litchfield says a judicial consent agreement requires Goodrich to fund clean-up facilities under EPA oversight.
