Mattel announced Tuesday that American Girl will debut its first boy doll in the brand’s 31-year history later this week.
Mattel is releasing a new series of “contemporary characters” on Thursday ahead of the industry’s New York City Toy Fair this weekend, Fortune magazine reported. Among the new characters are Nashville singer Tenney Grant and her drummer friend, Logan Everett.
Logan, who has short brown hair, gray eyes and comes with a drum set, is American Girl’s first boy doll.
“A boy character has been a top request from our fans for decades,” American Girl spokeswoman Julie Parks said in a statement Tuesday, CNN reported.
“We do an enormous amount of research with girls and their parents, and the one thing we’ve heard loud and clear is a desire for more — specifically more characters and stories from today — with more experiences, more diversity and more interests,” she said.
Other dolls to be released this year include a Korean-American contemporary doll named Z Yang, and Nanea, a historical WWII-era doll who lives in Hawaii.
