BOGALUSA, La. (AP) - Gary Parker has seen a lot of changes on the Pearl River, but none as disturbing as the log jam, littered with trash, currently sitting on the Mississippi side of the river, south of Pool’s Bluff, just outside of Bogalusa, Louisiana.

Parker tells WWL-TV it’s so significant that the old horseshoe in the river is now dried up and a new cut that the river formed naturally to get around the log jam is now facing the same fate.

Democratic state Rep. Malinda White, of Bogalusa, says if the clutter isn’t addressed, it could cause future flooding, north and south of the build-up, decline recreational use and damage commercial needs on the river.

White says agencies from Louisiana, Mississippi and Washington, D.C. must step in to address the situation.

The logjam has inspired a Pearl River Clean Sweep event from Jackson, Mississippi, to Slidell, Louisiana. It’s scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23. To learn more visit www.pearlriverkeeper.com .
