At long last, Massage Envy has come to the District. The Scottsdale, Arizona-based pampering service has had capital-area locations in College Park and Lanham in Maryland, as well as in Arlington, Virginia, but with the opening of the company’s new Tenleytown location in Northwest, the business has at last breached the capital sphere (or rather, square).
“When the opportunity came to open up this D.C. location, we jumped aboard, and it has taken us three years,” Terri Jacques, franchise owner of the new Tenleytown location, told The Washington Times at the grand opening Thursday.
Ms. Jacques, who with her husband has opened the Maryland locations for the company, has been working for three years to bring Massage Envy to the District. Tenleytown, with its two Metro stops, affluent community and walkable neighborhoods, made it ideal.
“It’s easy for people to get here not only for our customers but employees as well,” Ms. Jacques said. “There’s a lot of fitness clubs in this area, so [healthfulness] and regular massage is going to be very beneficial to them.”
Leigh Catherine Miles, executive director of Tenleytown Main Street, gave opening remarks before the ribbon cutting Thursday at the new store, located on Wisconsin Ave NW. Ms. Miles said she was proud not only to welcome a new neighbor, but also to support a woman- and minority-owned business.
“I’m a big supporter of women and progression,” Ms. Jacques said. “More women and minority [business owners] would be awesome.”
Joe Magnacca, Massage Envy’s CEO, flew out from the company’s Arizona’s headquarters for the big day.
“Terri is a member of our franchise association board, so we’ve been following this [location] for quite a while,” Mr. Magnacca, a native of Toronto, Canada, told The Times. “We wanted to be in the [District] market for around 10 years [and] we’re extremely excited with where we landed.”
In addition to massages, stretching services and facials, the new Tenleytown location offers health and wellness products. Those with existing memberships from other franchise locations can immediately enjoy their benefits in Tenleytown.
“They’ll be able to get the professionalism we impart, the training we provide to all our staff to service them just like they would at their home location,” Ms. Jacques said, adding she hopes for 1,000 new members to enroll at Tenleytown by the first quarter of 2018.
“I’m super excited that we’ve been able to crack this nut of being in Washington, D.C., and market affordability is going to make it even easier,” Ms. Jacques said.
