WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Public health officials say a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in New Castle County.

The Delaware Division of Public Health said the animal was found dead in the Sharpley area after it apparently sparred with a domestic cat and the cat’s owner Thursday. The cat is now being quarantined for exposure to rabies.

WDEL-FM reports (https://bit.ly/2pmzkyN ) a rabid raccoon was found last week fighting with dogs in the Chalfonte community, and earlier this month a cat in Bridgeville tested positive for rabies.

Residents are urged to take precautions including avoiding wild animals and ensuring their pets are up-to-date on vaccinations.
