MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch are praising the U.S. State Department’s decision to bring up to 100 refugees from Syria and Iraq to Rutland during the next year.

The three-member delegation released a joint statement saying they’re confident Rutland and Vermont will welcome the newcomers.

The three say that struggling families, fleeing peril and motivated to start new lives, enrich America and contribute immeasurably to Vermont.

They also hailed the announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Vermont a $150,000 grant to help the newly resettled refugees get jobs and become self-sufficient.
