Tim Tebow is taking part in an instructional league for the New York Mets, and it has been an absolute media frenzy.
One question that popped up among the flurry of questions thrown at Tebow was his thoughts on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his kneeling-during-the-national anthem protests, which have drawn support from other athletes and many in the media. Tebow gave a reserved answer.
“I think there’s a lot of people who have thoughts out there,’’ Tebow said to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale, “and for now, I’m just going to keep mine to myself about it. I mean, I think that when people have belief in something, or conviction about something, trying to stand for that, is a good thing.
“And then it’s all about trying to stand for it the right way.’’
Tebow, a devout Christian, appears to support Kaepernick’s and other NFL players’ right to protest, but not necessarily the way it is being carried out.
Tebow was ridiculed by some opponents, fans and the media during his National Football League career for, among other things, conspicuously kneeling after touchdowns. Tebow said the gesture — which became known as “Tebowing” — was intended as an homage to his Christian faith.
