Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who has been crushing home runs since 1997, on Thursday night passed a Yankee great on the all-time home run list.
In the eighth inning against the New York Yankees, Ortiz smashed his 537th career home run dead center at Fenway Park. That latest home run put him ahead of Mickey Mantle on the all-time list.
Ortiz, who will retire after this season, will likely finish his career with the 17th most home runs on the all-time list. Next in line at 16th all-time is former Philadelphia Philly Mike Schmidt, who has 548 career home runs.
The latest Ortiz base clearing hit was his 34th home run of the season, good for ninth in the American League.
Ortiz later met with the fan who caught his historic home run, trading a new autographed ball for his keepsake.
When you catch a historic @davidortiz homer, you get to meet the man and trade for your own signed ball! ⚾️🖊💪 pic.twitter.com/hKcvdbiz2r
