A 31-year-old Italian woman has committed suicide a year after video of her performing a sex act went viral.
In spring 2015, Tiziana Cantone had sent six different videos to five friends whom she trusted, but a day later, the clips were shared on porn sites and social media, the Independent newspaper reported Thursday, citing original reporting from the Italian-language newspaper La Repubblica.
According to the IBTimes, Ms. Cantone presumably passed along the video to her friends to mock an ex-boyfriend, only to find herself the victim of the phenomenon known as revenge porn.
A humiliated Ms. Cantone moved, changed her name and embarked on a legal odyssey to remove the video from the internet, the Independent reported. The video was scrubbed from search engines, but kept reappearing online.
Ms. Cantone unsuccessfully attempted suicide twice before, the Independent reported. Italian authorities have opened an criminal investigation of her death.
