Legislator among appointees to Utah 4th District Court

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A longtime state lawmaker is among three people Gov. Gary Herbert has appointed to the Utah bench.

KSL-TV in Salt Lake City reports (https://bit.ly/2dzE9zg ) that Republican Rep. Kraig Powell was named Friday to fill a vacancy of a retiring judge on the 4th District Court.

Herbert also appointed assistant U.S. attorney Robert Lunnen and attorney Anthony Howell to fill other vacancies in the same court.

Powell has served the Legislature since 2009 but took his name out of the running for re-election in April.

He also practices municipal, real estate and probate law.

Herbert says Powell’s academic background and thoughtful approach to the law make him an ideal candidate.

All three must be confirmed by the Utah Senate.
