WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Candidates vying for the top political post in Warwick sparred on everything from charter schools to a runway extension meant to accommodate more and larger planes at Warwick’s T.F. Green Airport.
Longtime Republican Mayor Scott Avedisian went head-to-head with Democratic challenger Richard Corrente, president of Bankers Mortgage Corp., in a Friday night debate at City Hall that highlighted the airport deal.
The Providence Journal reports that Corrente challenged the airport plan, saying that if elected he would renegotiate the agreement. He argued that Avedisian gave away millions of dollars in real-estate taxes and got little in return.
Avedisian defended the deal, saying the agreement to move Main Avenue and some recreational fields to make room for the runway was hammered out with all City Council members present.
