MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a suburban New York bartender will spend 10 years in prison for raping a German tourist after slipping a drug into her drink while she was staying at his apartment.
Dennis Edison was convicted in August of rape and sexual abuse.
Prosecutors on Long Island say the victim and a friend had met the assailant through a travel website.
Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas says the women were staying at Edison’s Long Beach, New York apartment last November.
The victim became violently ill and went to a hospital. Doctors said her symptoms matched those of the date rape drug, but the drug was out of her system.
A judge convicted Edison based on circumstantial evidence. His attorney says the sex was consensual and an appeal is planned.
