PHOENIX (AP) - A jail inmate who escaped custody from Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies in Phoenix has been recaptured near Avondale.

Sheriff’s officials say detectives caught 25-year-old Michael Hoffman about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Hoffman escaped hours earlier after kicking out the back window of a transport van.

He has been serving a nine-month sentence in a county jail for aggravated assault.

Hoffman pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of aggravated assault after a September 2015 domestic-violence incident involving his girlfriend at their home.
