ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - A complaint filed with the Alabama Ethics Commission questions whether a north Alabama prosecutor broke the law by sending a campaign letter to members of a county grand jury.
The Athens News Courier (https://bit.ly/2eXXbhZ ) reports the commission is being asked to determine whether Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones violated the state ethics law with the letter. The law prohibits officials from using their offices for private financial gain.
Jones, a Republican, is seeking re-election against former Limestone District Attorney Kristi Valls, an independent.
Jones told the paper he sent a letter to grand jurors about his re-election campaign, but he doesn’t believe that’s a violation.
Grand jurors’ names generally aren’t made public. Jones’ campaign letter starts by thanking grand juror for their service and asking for their votes.
