Like many wealthy New Yorkers of retirement age, Donald Trump considers Florida a second home, visiting his beloved Mar-a-Lago resort quite often. But with the presidency comes some airspace restrictions that may ruffle the feathers of the South Florida jet set.
“Private-jet owners and even commercial planes are being warned they will be diverted to Miami when Trump’s plane is at Palm Beach International Airport,” PageSix.com reported Monday.
Page Six added that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is considering what airspace restrictions will need to be in place when Mr. Trump visits his Palm Beach golf resort.
After Mr. Trump’s election-night victory, the FAA placed flight restrictions over airspace above Trump Tower and the vice president-elect’s home in Indiana, CNN reported Thursday, noting that at least one general-aviation lobby group seems to have concerns with the arrangements for the former.
On its website, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) noted the importance of Manhattan airspace to New York City’s popular helicopter sightseeing tours.
“AOPA respects the need to provide increased security for President-elect Donald Trump, but we will work to see if there is a way to balance the restrictions while maintaining (general aviation) access to the airspace,” Nobuyo Sakata, AOPA director of aviation security, said in an online statement, CNN reported.
