Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drugs policy, as first reported by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Jeffery is eligible to return to the team after the Bears’ game against the Detroit Lions on Dec. 11.

Jeffery, 26, will have to forfeit $3.435 million due to the suspension.

This season has been a struggle for Jeffery. With an uneasy quarterback situation, where both Jay Cutler and Brian Hoyer have been utilized, Jeffery has just 40 receptions for 630 yards and a single touchdown. The production was set to be Jeffery’s least-productive season since his rookie year in 2012.

The timing of the drug suspension couldn’t have been worse. Not only is Jeffery in the midst of an underwhelming season, but he is due to become a free agent this offseason. Already making $14.599 million this year, the suspension and lack of numbers offensively could cost Jeffrey a big contract.

For the next four games, Chicago will be forced to rely on Eddie Royal and Cameron Meredith a bit more in the offense.
