A 4-year-old Nevada boy is expected to make a full recovery, beating overwhelming odds to survive an injury that should have taken his life.

CBS affiliate KBOI in Boise reported on Saturday that young Killian Gonzalez was “internally decapitated” in a recent car crash, his head “essentially just holding on by a thread— like the spinal cord.”

It was only the steady hand of a passing motorist — an off-duty police officer’s wife — which saved the boy’s life, KBOI reported. “With a little guidance from her husband, [Leah] Woodward sat up the lifeless 4-year-old and held C-Spine [sic].”

“I’m trying to stay calm, but inside I’m panicking,” Mrs. Woodward told KBOI. “I’m thinking I don’t know what I’m doing, and it was the worst feeling I’ve ever had to not know how to help.”

Whatever she did appears to have worked. “Killian is expected to make a full recovery. He’s eating, walking, and even sitting up by himself …,” KBOI reported.

“No mom should lose their child, and she gets to have her boy,” a tearful Mrs. Woodward said. “That’s really awesome.”
