NEW YORK (AP) - Police have charged a New York woman with assault as a hate crime and other offenses after she allegedly stabbed a man following an altercation on a subway train in Manhattan.

The 30-year-old Hispanic woman was arrested around 11 p.m. Sunday after police say she stabbed a 44-year-old black man several times with a two-inch blade on the No. 4 train in Harlem.

Police say the incident began when the victim offered his seat to the woman, who declined and told her cousin in Spanish that she “didn’t want to sit next to a black person.”

A heated argument between the two turned violent after the man attempted to exit the train at 125th Street. He was transported to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.
