Rabble-rousing filmmaker Michael Moore on Friday promised to protest Donald Trump’s inauguration next month – assuming the president-elect is sworn in as expected.
In a letter published by The Hollywood Reporter this week, the “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11” director said he plans to be in Washington, D.C. next month to demonstrate Mr. Trump’s presidential inauguration.
Despite only weeks remaining until Mr. Trump takes the oath of office, however, his letter raised the possibility of the president-elect being stopped short of entering the White House.
“If there’s one thing we’ve learned from this election, don’t assume anything that’s supposed to happen will,” Mr. Moore wrote. “If I had told you a year ago that a socialist would win nearly half of all the Democratic primaries and caucuses, that would have sounded insane. If I would have told you that a candidate bragging about his sexual assaults or attacking a Gold Star family would be his path to winning, you would have ended this interview. If I would have told you that Donald Trump was going to win, you might have called upon a family member of mine to do an intervention. Oh wait. I did say that! Why was there no intervention?!”
“If by some awful happenstance Trump shows up to be sworn in on January 20th, I will be there helping lead the national protest and non-violently disrupting the Inauguration of a man no one other than the electoral college elected,” he added.
If Mr. Trump is inaugurated as expected, then the filmmaker said he expects leadership in the Republican-controlled House and Senate will “start enacting an assembly line of legislation” as soon as possible to be signed by the new commander in chief.
“This impending disaster requires everyone to get involved now — all hands on deck! This is not a drill!” he concluded his letter.
Mr. Moore, 62, initially endorsed U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont independent, in the 2016 White House race. The filmmaker later backed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton after she beat out Mr. Sanders for the party’s nomination, and in October he released a documentary, “Michael Moore in TrumpLand,” centered around this year’s presidential election.
