The personnel announcement comes four months after the resignation of retired Rear Adm. John Kirby, who now serves as the spokesman for the State Department.
“Peter’s years of experience in the national media, coupled with his personal integrity and nonpartisan approach, make him an ideal fit to represent this institution during a crucial period for our nation and our military,” Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said in a statement. “I want to thank Peter for taking on this challenging role, and for his commitment to helping the American people better understand the efforts of this department.”
“He’s following his calling of public service, and we couldn’t be more proud of him,” Ms. Milne wrote in the email. “He’s been an invaluable member of our Washington team, and his calmness under pressure (and flawless hair) will serve him well in this new role.”
