The world awoke to a nuclear deal with Iran as expected this morning. However, it seems Iran being allowed to develop and deploy a nuclear weapon was not the only development that will reduce American national security in the short run. Russia seems to have negotiated a sweetener as well with the American appeaser-in-chief.
Russian Television (RT) quoted Russian Foreign Secretary Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday at a conference in Vienna, “We all probably remember that in April 2009 in Prague President Obama said that if the Iran nuclear program issue is sorted out, then the task of creating the European segment of the missile defense system will disappear.
“That’s why we drew the attention of our American colleagues to this fact today and we will expect a reaction.”
In other words, Russia expects that the United States will abandon its missile defense efforts in Europe now that the Iran “deal” has been completed. Never mind that the deal does not prevent Iran from continuing to enrich uranium and eventually developing a nuclear weapon which will plunge the Middle East into an arms race and allow Iran to threaten America’s former number-one ally in the region, Israel. Never mind that Russia is sending nuclear bombers regularly near NATO allies in the Baltics and elsewhere and building up troops on the Ukrainian border and inside of East Ukraine. Never mind that North Korea and other rogue states are pushing forward with missile technology that could one day threaten NATO on the continent as well as the United States.
The ability to destroy incoming warheads has been the one thing that has frightened the Russian defense establishment since Ronald Reagan first pushed Strategic Missile Defense or SDI. It is what pushed the Soviet Union off the cliff into the abyss. It obviously still threatens Russia. Only a fool would remove this capability and stop its development in the face of Russian actions, or a person that wants to weaken American security.
