The Washington Wizards announced Saturday that shooting guard Bradley Beal has “the beginnings of a stress reaction in his lower right fibula” and will be out two weeks, then re-examined.
The cause for concern here is that the injury is a repeat for Beal,who has missed games on four separate occasions in his four-year career because of stress injuries to his lower right leg.
Beal first missed time in November 2013 because of a stress injury in his distal right fibula. He missed more time the following season because of a stress injury in his proximal right fibula. Last season, he missed nine days because of a mild stress reaction in his right fibula.
Beal, 22, is in the final year of his rookie contract. During the offseason, the Wizards offered Beal a contract extension that he declined, saying before the season began that he believed he is a “max” player.
He is averaging a career-high 19.8 points per game, though his shooting percentages are consistent with his career numbers.
Without Beal, the Wizards will increase the load for Garrett Temple and Gary Neal.
