It is now likely that Kim Jong-un’s North Korean regime possesses the ability to build miniaturized nuclear warheads, a top U.S. general said Friday.

Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of U.S. forces on the Korean peninsula, told reporters at the Pentagon that North Korea’s mastery of the technology has put it within reach of having a nuclear-tipped missile, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“I think given their technological capabilities, the time that they been working on this, that they probably have the capabilities to put this together,” the general said.

North Korea has struggled for years to put together a functioning missile, a launcher and a nuclear warhead, but Gen. Scaparrotti’s comments suggest it is very close to achieving its goal.

The U.S. has more than 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea, The Journal reported.
